Campinas resident ordered to reduce number of cats following neighbor complaints

The Court of Justice of São Paulo has ordered a resident of the Jardim Boa Esperança neighborhood in Campinas to gradually reduce the number of cats kept at her property. The decision, which was upheld unanimously by the 2nd Reserved Chamber for the Environment, follows years of complaints from neighbors.

Since 2021, local residents have reported issues including bad odors, dirt, noise, and cats entering other homes. While initial court orders focused on improving the cleanliness and maintenance of the property, the owner stated she lacked the financial means to meet all requirements. Consequently, the court ruled that the number of animals must be reduced through responsible adoption and guidance from competent authorities.

The ruling does not require the removal of all animals; the owner may keep those she can care for adequately while maintaining hygiene and safety standards. Recommended measures include the neutering of unsterilized cats, reinforcing cleaning routines, and halting the intake of new animals to balance animal welfare with the rights of neighbors to peace and sanitation.
