Brazil launches Sovereign Cloud to secure SUS health data

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has launched the 'Sovereign Cloud of SUS' in partnership with the Federal Data Processing Service (Serpro). This strategic initiative aims to increase digital sovereignty by ensuring that public health data is processed and stored exclusively within Brazilian territory, subject to national laws and the General Data Protection Law (LGPD).

Health Minister Alexandre Padilha stated that the project provides the Unified Health System (SUS) with its 'own house for the health data of the Brazilian population.' The first phase of the implementation focuses on two critical systems: the National Registry of SUS Users (CadSUS) and the National Health Data Network (RNDS), which currently manages over 5 billion health records.

The transition involves a phased architectural convergence. Technical teams will work to consolidate work models, update environment inventories, and map requirements for the future target architecture. Serpro will provide the necessary data center capacity, processing power, and connectivity to ensure critical data remains under national jurisdiction.
