Campo Grande Crochet Course Empowers 30 Women

Thirty women in Campo Grande, Brazil, completed a free crochet training program organized by the Secretaria Executiva da Mulher (Semu). The courses were held in two neighborhoods – the Catholic Community of Santa Luzia in Vila Nhanhá and the Centro de Referência de Assistência Social (CRAS) in the Los Angeles district.

The program aimed to provide professional qualification, encourage entrepreneurship and create new sources of income. Instruction was delivered by teacher Suelem Mary da Silva in Vila Nhanhá and by Semu social worker and artisan Zunilda Freitas at the CRAS Los Angeles. Participants reported increased confidence and a desire to turn their new skills into income, with one woman saying, “I never thought I could learn crochet, but with the teacher’s patience I made a hat and feel happy to keep learning.”
