Rio Grande do Norte advances battery energy storage projects

Nine energy storage projects using Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are currently undergoing environmental licensing with the Institute of Sustainable Development and Environment (Idema) in Rio Grande do Norte. These projects aim to mitigate energy curtailment, a phenomenon where wind and solar generation is cut due to operational restrictions, leading to financial losses for renewable energy companies.

The technology allows for the storage of surplus energy produced during low-demand periods to be used when demand increases. Most of these applications are linked to existing renewable energy plants. The development of this sector was a central topic at the 7th Energy Storage Brasil event held at the Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Norte (Fiern) in Natal.
