Camprodon approves conversion of former Birba factory into residential units

The Camprodon City Council has approved a plan to convert the former Birba biscuit factory into a residential complex. The building, located on Maristany Avenue, is a locally protected cultural asset (BCIL) that has been vacant since the factory relocated in 2008.

The project will transform the industrial site into approximately 55 housing units. Under local regulations, 45% of the new homes must be designated as official protection housing, available for either rent or sale. Because the building is a protected asset, the owner is prohibited from altering its external aesthetics, including parts of the perimeter fence and garden.

As part of the urban planning modification, the property must also provide a new pedestrian path connecting Carrer Nou and Maristany Avenue, which will become municipal property. Additionally, the Can Birba gardens must be handed over to the municipality. While the project has faced criticism from opposition members labeling it as housing speculation, the mayor clarified that the site will not be used for a new elderly care residence.
