Camtic urges Costa Rican companies to strengthen cybersecurity against AI-driven attacks

The Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies (Camtic) has urged companies, cooperatives, and institutions in Costa Rica to strengthen their cybersecurity measures. This warning comes in response to the advancement of artificial intelligence tools capable of automating and expanding the scope of cyberattacks.

Camtic noted that AI reduces the time, cost, and specialized labor required to exploit existing system vulnerabilities. The organization emphasized that cybersecurity must be treated as a strategic responsibility by boards and management rather than being limited to IT departments. This call for action follows significant cyber incidents in Costa Rica in 2022, including attacks on the Ministry of Finance and the Social Security Fund (CCSS).

More than 100 technology and infrastructure organizations, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, have signed an open letter warning that AI-assisted attacks may become more frequent and sophisticated in the coming months. However, Camtic also noted that AI provides opportunities to identify and correct vulnerabilities more rapidly.
