Barcelona's Can Bruixa station sets record with 52 tropical nights
The Can Bruixa meteorological station in Barcelona has recorded a historic 52 tropical nights this summer, where minimum temperatures did not fall below 25 degrees Celsius. This figure sets a new record for the station’s 40-year data series, surpassing the previous maximum of 51 nights recorded in 2003 and 46 in 2022.
Data from Meteocat indicates that the intensity of the heat is also increasing; approximately one in three of these tropical nights saw temperatures exceeding 27 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded minimum temperature during this period reached 28.4 degrees Celsius.
Health experts and researchers from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) have highlighted the severe public health risks associated with nocturnal heat. Studies suggest that nighttime heat can be more lethal than daytime heat because it prevents the human body from recovering from accumulated heat. Research indicates that mortality attributed to nighttime temperatures can be significantly higher than that caused by daytime heat, posing a particular risk to the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
