Can Oncu breaks lap record to take pole at Estoril
Turkish rider Can Oncu, riding for Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing, secured his fifth pole position of the season at the Circuito Estoril in Portugal. Oncu set a new Supersport class lap record with a time of 1:39.011, leading a field of 34 riders.
Lucas Mahias followed in second place for GMT94 Yamaha, while Tom Booth-Amos secured the final front-row spot for PTR Triumph Factory Racing. The qualifying session was marked by increasing winds, which caused Valentin Debise to crash; the championship runner-up will start Race 1 from 17th on the grid.
Championship leader Albert Arenas qualified ninth. With an 86-point advantage over Debise, Arenas has the opportunity to secure the WorldSSP title during Saturday’s Race 1 if he manages to limit his points loss to his main rival.
