Canacintra reports 63 billion pesos in annual piracy sales in Mexico

The National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra) reports that the sale of counterfeit products in Mexico reaches more than 63 billion pesos annually. During the National Forum on Logistics Security, Combatting Piracy, and Smuggling, Canacintra President Lourdes Medina Ortega highlighted that this illegal market affects diverse sectors, including textiles, footwear, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electronics, food, beverages, and tobacco.

Medina Ortega noted that five out of ten companies are impacted by piracy, with estimated losses reaching 124 billion pesos in 2025. The illicit trade also poses significant risks to public health and finances; for instance, piracy in the tobacco sector accounts for 26% of the market and results in tax evasion exceeding 23 billion pesos per year.

To combat these challenges, Canacintra proposes moving from reactive strategies to prevention and intelligence. The organization advocates for increased information sharing between authorities and the private sector, as well as the use of digital tools to track the origin and destination of goods. The rise of counterfeit sales through social media and messaging platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, and WhatsApp has also been identified as a growing concern.
