Canada accelerates infrastructure and energy development

Canada is entering a significant period of infrastructure development aimed at strengthening its economy, energy security, and sovereignty. The federal government is working to accelerate major projects through the Major Projects Office, which assists in navigating regulatory and approval processes for investments spanning tens of billions of dollars. Key priority sectors include critical minerals, energy, transportation, and Arctic infrastructure.

To support these developments, there is an increasing reliance on geomatics, surveying, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to provide the spatial foundation required for planning and construction. Additionally, the Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund is providing federal funding through 2030 to support clean energy and transportation infrastructure.

In the energy sector, Canada is positioned to potentially become a major global liquefied natural gas (LNG) powerhouse. Disruptions to global supplies, including damage to facilities in Qatar and weather-related issues in Australia, have increased demand from Asian markets. Canada’s geographic advantage, particularly through British Columbia, offers shorter shipping routes to countries like Japan compared to the U.S. Gulf Coast. There is growing speculation regarding a major expansion of the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat to meet this international demand.
