Canada advances submarine procurement with Nova Scotia prep and West Coast shipyard readiness

The Canadian government selected Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) as the preferred supplier for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, which will deliver up to 12 new ice‑capable diesel‑electric submarines to replace the aging Victoria‑class fleet. Premier Tim Houston said Nova Scotia must prepare for the project’s economic boost, stressing the need for additional housing, health services and skilled‑trade workers. The province aims to expand its apprenticeship program, which already exceeds its 2026 target with nearly 9,000 apprentices, and is planning a new maintenance facility to support the submarines and their supply chain.

On the West Coast, Seaspan Shipyards in Esquimalt, British Columbia, announced a teaming agreement with TKMS and affirmed its capacity to provide through‑life support for the new fleet. Seaspan, which has maintained Canada’s submarines since 2005, employs over 300 technicians and tradespeople and expects the first new submarine to be delivered in the mid‑2030s.
