Canada AI adoption shows performance and sovereignty challenges
Recent data and industry discussions highlight the current state of artificial intelligence in Canada, focusing on both functional outcomes in finance and the strategic concept of AI sovereignty.
A KPMG 2026 survey of large Canadian companies indicates that while AI adoption is broad, the reported benefits trail global averages. Only 36% of Canadian respondents reported improved forecast accuracy, compared to 64% globally. Additionally, Canadian firms reported lower rates of improved decision speed (45% vs 71%) and lower rates of tracking AI KPIs (64% vs 85%) compared to their international peers.
Regarding national strategy, industry leaders suggest that AI sovereignty for Canada should focus on control and independence within the supply chain rather than total domestic production. Experts from Microsoft Canada and Cohere noted that while components like chip-manufacturing gases or specialized machinery are sourced internationally, maintaining control over critical infrastructure for sectors like healthcare and national defense is essential. Organizational AI use in Canada has recently risen to approximately 19.2%, according to Statistics Canada.
