Canada allocates $60 million to national sports organizations
The Canadian federal government has announced $60 million in new funding for more than 60 national sports organizations. The initiative aims to address financial challenges, strengthen athlete development, and improve safety standards across the country’s sporting landscape.
Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden unveiled the funding, noting that athlete protection is a central component of the government’s strategy. This follows recommendations from the Future of Sport in Canada Commission, which identified systemic issues including widespread abuse, complicated complaint procedures, and funding shortages.
Significant allocations include $2.8 million for the Canadian Rugby Union (Rugby Canada), $2.4 million for Canoe Kayak Canada, and $2.3 million for Canada Basketball. Rugby Canada will also receive an additional $898,000 for the 2026-2027 period to support hosting international matches, including events for the Nations Cup and the WXV series. This move is part of a broader $1 billion historical investment in Canadian sports intended to modernize infrastructure and support high-performance athletes.
