Canada allocates funding for Northern Ontario economic and infrastructure projects

The Canadian federal government is investing nearly $5 million through FedNor’s Community Investment Initiative to bolster economic development in Northern Ontario. The $4.9 million fund will support 17 initiatives, allowing municipalities and First Nation communities, including the SADC North Claybelt Community Futures Development Corporation, to hire or retain Economic Development Officers for the next three years. These officers will focus on strategic planning, attracting investment, and job creation in sectors such as mining, forestry, renewable energy, and tourism.

Additionally, the Ontario government is providing approximately $200,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for infrastructure upgrades in the Town of Thessalon. The funding will be used to modernize the Thessalon Marina by installing six new docks, two new ramps, and an improved outdoor gazebo. These improvements aim to enhance tourism and recreational boating access to Lake Huron’s North Channel.
