Canada and Brazil Aim to Finalize Mercosur Free Trade Deal by 2026

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said the two sides intend to conclude a free‑trade agreement between Canada and the Mercosur bloc by the end of 2026. Negotiators are moving at an accelerated pace and say only technical details remain. The pact will cover a wide range of sectors and is accompanied by auxiliary agreements on customs cooperation, information‑integrity and anti‑disinformation measures. Canada pledged US$150 million for Brazilian sustainable‑energy and infrastructure projects, while bilateral trade reached roughly C$15 billion in 2025. A joint Brazil‑Canada Science, Technology and Innovation committee meeting is scheduled for 16 September in Brasília.

Canada views the agreement as a way to diversify its trade partners beyond the United States, though some agricultural groups have voiced concerns about increased imports of sensitive products.
