Canada and China relaunch ministerial environment dialogue
Canada and China have agreed to relaunch their ministerial environment dialogue following meetings in Beijing held from September 27 to 29. During the annual meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, Canadian Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin and China’s ecology and environment minister, Huang Runqiu, committed to renewing this government-to-government forum.
The agreement serves as a renewed channel for communication regarding climate policy and carbon markets rather than a finalized treaty or specific emissions target. The move builds on a strategic partnership established in January to expand cooperation through bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
Economic cooperation is also a focus, with the Canada-China Business Council planning a clean-technology trade mission to China in November 2026. Key sectors identified for potential collaboration include energy storage and batteries, hydrogen and fuel cells, carbon management and CCUS, renewable energy technologies, smart grids, and waste-to-energy solutions.
