Canada and EU negotiate digital trade agreement

Canada and the European Union are advancing negotiations for a digital trade agreement intended to facilitate cross-border commerce. International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu visited Ireland to push for progress ahead of the upcoming Canada-EU Summit scheduled to take place in Montreal.

The proposed agreement aims to reduce friction regarding e-signatures, e-contracts, paperless trade, secure cross-border data flows, and duties on electronic transmissions and e-commerce. In 2024, Canada exported approximately $15 billion in digital services to the EU.

As part of a broader effort to strengthen ties with Europe, Prime Minister Mark Carney has been working to establish closer links. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also suggested that Canada could potentially become the first associate member of the European Union. The two parties are expected to announce further steps in their partnership during the Montreal summit.
