Canada and Mexico see shifting tourism trends amid trade tensions

Shifting travel patterns are emerging between Canada and Mexico, driven by both political and economic factors. Canadian travelers are increasingly choosing destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America over the United States, influenced by US–Canada trade tensions, tariffs, and changing political attitudes. Other popular destinations for Canadians include Punta Cana, Jamaica, and Costa Rica, as travelers seek affordable all-inclusive packages and direct flight connections.

Simultaneously, there is a surge in northbound tourism from Mexico to Canada. In Alberta, Mexican visitors spent approximately $51 million in 2025, with passenger volumes rising from 6,000 to 8,000 year-over-year. Alberta’s tourism minister, Andrew Boitchenko, noted that Mexican visitation to the province is projected to be 40 percent higher by 2030, with spending expected to increase by 60 percent. Efforts are underway to strengthen diplomatic and tourism relationships to promote Alberta as a year-round destination for wealthy Mexican travelers.
