Rep. Nathaniel Moran's AI Incident Reporting Act advances in US Congress

U.S. Representative Nathaniel Moran (R‑TX) introduced the AI Incident Reporting Act on June 25. The bill mandates that AI developers notify the Commerce Department within seven days of any serious safety or security incident, and requires the department to alert congressional leaders within 48 hours for the most critical cases. Reportable events include models that evade oversight, unauthorized access to model weights, and capabilities that could contribute to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive threats. The legislation follows a June 12 Commerce Department directive that forced Anthropic to suspend access to certain models amid national‑security concerns.
