Canada and Northwest Territories commit $655 million to build 560 affordable homes by 2030
The federal government and the Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) signed two funding agreements on July 27, committing a total of $655 million to address the territory’s housing shortage. Under the primary “agreement in principle,” Build Canada Homes will provide $200 million, the GNWT will contribute $190 million, and $90 million will come from other sources, including private capital.
The funding is intended to deliver at least 560 affordable housing units by 2030, comprised of roughly 380 social‑housing units, 130 affordable units and 50 transitional or supportive units. At least 132 of these units are already in various stages of development, and $75 million of the Build Canada Homes contribution is earmarked for projects serving Indigenous communities.
Additional projects announced at the former Hilltop Apartments site in Yellowknife include 64 transitional and social units in Yellowknife, 40 new homes in Inuvik and repairs to 150 existing social‑housing units, bringing the total of new or repaired homes to 818 across the territory. A March GNWT report placed the current housing deficit between 1,750 and 2,700 units.
