Canada announces C$8.7 billion support for steel and auto sectors

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have unveiled a C$8.7 billion support package aimed at protecting the nation’s steel and automotive industries from the impact of United States tariffs. The initiative is designed to bolster industrial capacity, modernize production lines, and preserve jobs amid shifting North American trade dynamics.

The plan includes a Joint Steel Action Fund, which will provide C$3.55 billion from the federal government and C$1.67 billion from Ontario over five years to help steelmakers diversify their products. Additionally, the automotive sector is slated to receive C$2.5 billion in investment over two years, with C$1.5 billion coming from the federal government and C$1 billion from Ontario to support electric vehicle production and machinery upgrades.

The announcement follows a period of trade volatility, including a 50 percent tariff imposed by Washington on approximately C$20 billion of Canadian goods. Economic data indicates that Canadian automotive exports to the U.S. have fallen by more than 10 percent, while U.S. exports to Canada have decreased by over 20 percent. The support package is expected to create approximately 70,000 new jobs.
