Canada and Turkey establish strategic partnership

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have formalized a new strategic partnership following a three-day bilateral visit to Turkey. The agreement is supported by a three-year action plan focusing on cooperation in trade, investment, defense, security, energy, and transportation.

Key outcomes of the visit include the launch of negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, with the first round of talks scheduled to take place in Ankara from November 30 to December 4, 2026. To bolster economic ties, Türk Eximbank and Export Development Canada signed a memorandum of understanding to support joint projects in third-country markets, including Africa and the Middle East.

In the energy sector, Carney noted that the AtkinsRéalis bid to supply Candu nuclear reactors to Turkey has “good chances” of success. Additionally, an expanded air transportation agreement was formalized, which is expected to increase weekly passenger flights from 12 to 21 and provide unlimited capacity for cargo flights. The partnership aims to diversify trade and reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States.
