Canada and Turkey establish strategic partnership
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have launched a strategic partnership following Carney’s first bilateral visit to Turkey. The agreement includes a three-year action plan focused on four key pillars: trade, investment and innovation; energy and climate; defense and security; and intergovernmental dialogue.
In the defense sector, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Global Affairs Canada and Turkey’s Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) to facilitate joint manufacturing and industrial cooperation. Erdogan expressed expectations that the Canada-led Defense, Security and Resilience Bank will support these collaborative defense industry efforts.
On the economic front, the two nations agreed to initiate free trade agreement negotiations by the end of the year. The partnership aims to increase bilateral trade from the current $3 billion to a target of $10 billion. Cooperation is also expected to expand into energy, specifically regarding nuclear energy, critical minerals, and liquefied natural gas.
While the leaders emphasized collective resilience and market access, the rapprochement has drawn criticism from diaspora groups. The Hellenic Canadian Research Institute and other organizations expressed opposition to Carney’s visit to the Atatürk mausoleum, citing concerns regarding historical memory and human rights.
