Canada and Turkey launch strategic partnership during Prime Minister Carney's visit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in Turkey for a historic three-day visit, marking the first dedicated bilateral visit by a Canadian prime minister to the country. During meetings with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, the two leaders announced the launch of a Canada-Turkiye Strategic Partnership, supported by a three-year action plan.

The partnership focuses on four primary pillars: trade and investment, defense and security, energy, and people-to-people ties. To implement this, both nations plan to establish committees to draft specific action plans. Key economic goals include initiating negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) before the end of the year, with President Erdogan expressing hope to increase bilateral trade from approximately $3 billion to $10 billion.

In the energy sector, discussions are centered on liquefied natural gas (LNG), critical minerals, and the potential use of Canada’s CANDU nuclear technology for power plants on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. Defense cooperation is also a priority, with expected focus on maritime security and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology.

This diplomatic push is viewed as part of Prime Minister Carney’s broader strategy to diversify Canada’s economic partnerships and reduce trade dependence on the United States amid ongoing trade tensions with Washington.
