Canada and United States nearing trade agreement

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that a trade agreement between Canada and the United States is nearing completion. This follows a three-day reprieve granted by U.S. President Donald Trump. While Carney expressed caution on social media, noting that progress has been made without a finalized concrete deal, he stated the agreement aims to secure the best conditions for Canada’s strategic sectors and provide greater commercial certainty.

President Trump indicated on Truth Social that an agreement had been signed, prompting meetings with his ministers and provincial premiers. In Quebec, Premier Christine Fréchette described the discussions as productive but noted a lack of specific information, requesting further details from Ottawa before taking a formal position.

Preliminary details regarding tariff reductions suggest that duties on Canadian steel and aluminum could drop from 50% to 25%. Additionally, tariffs on vehicles are expected to decrease from 25% to 15%. The Canadian government has emphasized that its negotiation goals include preserving market access without duties for most products, protecting small and medium-sized enterprises, and maintaining national sovereignty amidst shifting U.S. trade policies.
