Canada implements retaliatory tariffs on $20bn of US goods

Canada has implemented retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, effective September 8, 2026. The new duties, which range from 15% to 50%, target nearly 700 products including steel, aluminum, dairy, agricultural equipment, and various household goods. This move follows the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations in late August and serves as a direct response to 50% tariffs previously imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian goods.

Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the measures are a necessary “dollar-for-dollar” response to protect Canadian workers and businesses. To mitigate the impact, the Canadian government has launched a $5.42 billion support package for affected small and medium-sized enterprises and workers. Notably, seafood products were removed from the tariff list following industry pushback.

In response to the escalation, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened further actions, including blocking the Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from selling planes in the United States unless manufacturing is moved to the U.S. The trade dispute has also seen symbolic escalations, such as an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
