Canada and U.S. hold urgent trade talks ahead of August 19 tariff deadline
Canadian trade minister Dominic LeBlanc met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Tuesday for the third time in three weeks. The meetings aim to avert a new set of U.S. tariffs scheduled to take effect on August 19.
U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products. The administration cited retaliation for Canadian counter-tariffs on U.S. steel and autos, as well as certain provincial restrictions on American alcohol. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office stated the tariffs would impact nearly $20 billion in imports, representing approximately 5.2% of the $383 billion in goods the U.S. imported from Canada in 2025.
Unlike previous trade measures, these tariffs will not be exempt under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Negotiators, including Canada’s Chief Trade Negotiator Janice Charette, are working to find a resolution. Sources suggest Ottawa may offer concessions on specific issues to prevent the imposition of the tariffs.
