Canada announces $254M for Port Saint John upgrades

The Canadian federal government has committed up to $254 million to the Saint John Trade Corridor project to modernize New Brunswick’s largest ocean port. Funded through the 2025 budget’s $5-billion Trade Diversification Corridor Fund, the investment aims to increase the port's capacity to handle between 825,000 and one million shipping containers annually.

Key infrastructure improvements include the expansion of port warehouses, the establishment of a new Canada Border Services Agency container examination facility, and dredging to increase high-water tidal windows by at least 30 per cent. The project also involves stabilizing the Bayshore Rail Terminal shoreline and upgrading 103 km of New Brunswick Southern Railway track to improve mainline speeds and reduce freight transit times.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon stated that these modernizations will strengthen supply chains and reinforce Canada’s position as a reliable trading partner. The project is being implemented in partnership with the Government of New Brunswick, the Saint John Port Authority, and several regional transportation and development agencies.
