Canada announces five-year travel ban for immigration fraud

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a warning regarding immigration fraud, announcing that individuals who submit false or altered documents will face a minimum five-year ban from entering the country.

The crackdown targets a wide range of misrepresentations, including forged passports, travel documents, language test results, educational certificates, and employment records. The IRCC also emphasized that medical information must be truthful, noting that misleading a panel physician about health conditions constitutes fraud. Additionally, applicants for permanent residency or citizenship must accurately report their physical presence in Canada.

Beyond document forgery, authorities are increasing scrutiny on marriage fraud. Immigration officers may conduct interviews and home visits to verify that marriages, common-law partnerships, or conjugal relationships are genuine and not entered into solely to secure immigration status. Penalties for fraud can include immediate application refusal, a five-year inadmissibility period, loss of resident status, or even the loss of Canadian citizenship.
