Canada announces highway and bridge projects in BC and Alberta

The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced overnight lane closures on Highway 99 in Delta on Aug. 10‑11, 2026, to install new bridge girders for the 78th Street overpass. Closures will begin in the evening, with full lane shutdowns an hour later, and the highway is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. each morning. Drivers are advised to use detours via Highways 91 and 17 and to allow extra travel time.

In Alberta, the provincial government held an open‑house meeting in Elnora on Aug. 5 to present plans for replacing the Mackenzie Crossing Bridge on Highway 590. The proposed two‑lane bridge, about 147 m long, would improve traffic flow and increase the speed limit to 80 km/h. Officials outlined a timeline that could see construction start in fall 2027, pending regulatory approvals and funding, with completion aimed for fall 2030.
