Canada announces major investments in sports and carbon capture

The Canadian government has announced significant investments in both the sports sector and clean energy infrastructure. In sports, Secretary of State Adam van Koeverden announced the release of $112 million in new funds. This includes over $8 million for Canada Alpin, which includes a $2.77 million supplementary payment. These funds aim to strengthen the national sports system, support athlete development, and improve infrastructure, bringing the total Sport Support Program budget to over $273 million for 2026-2027.

In the energy sector, the federal government and the government of Alberta, in collaboration with Enhance Energy, have announced the start of construction on the Origins carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility near Clive, Alberta. Scheduled to begin operations in January 2027, the Origins center is expected to become the largest CCS project in Canada and one of the largest of its kind globally. The project is part of Canada’s strategy to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 by decarbonizing heavy industries such as oil, gas, and manufacturing.
