Canada announces rail investments and high-speed study
The Canadian federal government and the Government of Alberta have announced a collaboration to study the potential for a high-speed rail network in Alberta. The proposed project aims to connect the Calgary – Red Deer – Edmonton corridor. This initiative will involve a joint governance structure to guide planning, conduct market studies, and explore short-term implementation possibilities to enhance intercity connectivity and economic growth.
In a separate development regarding national rail infrastructure, the Government of Canada has announced a 4.7 billion dollar investment to manufacture and maintain 313 new passenger rail cars. A significant portion of these cars is expected to be built in Northern Ontario, specifically benefiting the local workforce and Alstom Canada in Thunder Bay. This investment aims to modernize Canada’s aging long-distance fleet, which currently faces frequent breakdowns and service cancellations, particularly on rural routes.
