FBI reports largest U.S. violent crime decline since 1936

FBI data for 2025 reveals the largest year-to-year decline in violent crime rates in the United States since the agency began estimations in 1936. Violent crime rates fell significantly, with murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses decreasing by an estimated 18.1%, robbery by 18.5%, rape by 7.6%, and aggravated assault by 7.2%.

The 2025 murder rate of 4.1 per 100,000 inhabitants is tied with the rates recorded in 1955 and 1956 for the lowest in modern history. Property crime and hate crime also saw declines. Reported hate crime incidents fell by 7.0%, dropping from 11,404 in 2024 to 10,606 in 2025.

Despite the overall decline in hate crimes, religious-based hate crimes showed a disproportionate impact on the Jewish community. Of the 2,572 religion-based hate crimes reported, 64% targeted Jewish people, accounting for 15% of all reported hate crimes.
