Donald Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods amid USMCA dispute
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on a broad range of Canadian exports, including wine, hockey sticks, cement, dairy, alcohol, and certain automobiles. He said he does not care about updating the North American trade pact (USMCA/CUSMA), stating that Mexico and Canada need the United States but not vice‑versa. The United States has also decided not to extend the agreement, triggering an annual rolling review that could last up to a decade. The new duties contain no exemptions for products that comply with CUSMA and affect roughly $28 billion of Canadian exports – about five percent of Canada’s shipments to the United States. Canada’s trade minister Dominic LeBlanc, accompanied by chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, travelled to Washington for high‑level talks aimed at securing a modernised deal and a possible 16‑year extension of CUSMA. Tensions are heightened by the Gordie Howe International Bridge dispute and Trump’s threats of further tariffs in response to Canadian wildfire smoke drifting into U.S. states.
