Canada bans Russian hockey athletes from World Junior Championship
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Russia and Belarus will be prohibited from participating in international sporting competitions held on Canadian soil as long as the war in Ukraine continues. Specifically addressing the upcoming World Junior Championship in Alberta, Carney confirmed that Russian athletes will not be allowed to compete.
This decision follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which mandated that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) must reinstate Russian teams to international competition, including the tournament scheduled to begin December 26 in Edmonton and Red Deer.
In response to the CAS ruling, several European nations, including Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Latvia, and the Czech Republic, have announced intentions to boycott any matches against Russia. Norway cited security risks to players and staff as a primary reason for its refusal to play. Hockey Canada stated it is in discussions with the IIHF regarding the potential impact of these developments on the tournament.
