Canada bolsters domestic defense industry amid strained US relations

Canada is significantly increasing its domestic defense spending to reduce reliance on American military suppliers and bolster economic self-sufficiency. This shift comes amid strained relations with the United States, highlighted by recent tariff escalations and pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump for NATO members to increase contributions.

A new defense industrial strategy released by Prime Minister Mark Carney earmarks an additional $60 billion in funding over the next five years. This initiative aims to support domestic businesses within the defense and security supply chains, ranging from garment manufacturers producing military uniforms to tech startups developing remote Arctic sensors, resupply drones, and autonomous robots.

While Canada’s current national defense spending sits between $36 billion and $43 billion, this strategic pivot represents a generational change for a nation traditionally associated with peacekeeping. The move is designed to strengthen domestic capabilities and ensure Canadian contractors can compete alongside international firms.
