Canada Boosts Clean Electricity Strategy and Funds Indigenous Renewable Projects
The federal government released the "Powering Canada Strong" strategy, aiming to double the national electricity grid by 2050 and accelerate electrification to improve affordability, energy security and economic competitiveness. Clean Energy Canada praised the focus on grid expansion and demand‑side measures such as heat pumps and two‑way EV chargers, but warned the plan overstates natural‑gas reliance and understates the long‑term benefits of clean power.
In parallel, Natural Resources Canada announced a $4.5 million investment under the Clean Energy for Rural and Remote Communities program for Indigenous and remote communities in British Columbia. The funding will support renewable electricity, fuel and heat projects, training for local operation and maintenance, and job creation, aiming to reduce diesel use, lower energy costs and advance economic reconciliation.
Both initiatives underscore a shift toward renewable resources, with officials emphasizing the need for affordable, locally sourced clean energy while addressing concerns about fossil‑fuel exposure.
