Canada broadens online passport renewal for all eligible adults

The Canadian government announced on 28 July 2026 that its online passport renewal service is now available to every eligible adult citizen. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab said the change removes the previous cap on the number of users and aims to make passport services more convenient, especially for people in rural, remote or mobility‑challenged situations.

Eligible Canadians can submit their renewal application, a commercial passport photo and payment entirely digitally, avoiding the need to mail documents or visit a Service Canada centre. The service retains the 20‑business‑day processing standard and provides real‑time status updates. In‑person and mail‑in options remain for those who prefer them or who do not meet the online eligibility criteria. The expansion follows other recent passport‑service improvements, such as a 10‑business‑day fast‑track option at select centres and a guarantee that applications will be processed within 30 days or the passport will be issued for free.
