Canada business outlook: WestJet votes, bank earnings, and GDP data

Several key economic and political events are scheduled in Canada for the upcoming week. WestJet flight attendants are concluding a weeklong vote on a tentative contract deal that includes a wage increase of over 18 per cent over three years and a new duty period premium.

Major Canadian financial institutions are set to release third-quarter earnings reports. BMO Financial Group and Scotiabank will report on Tuesday, followed by National Bank on Wednesday. CIBC, Royal Bank of Canada, and Toronto-Dominion Bank are scheduled for Thursday. Additionally, EQB Inc. will report its third-quarter results on Wednesday, marking its first report since acquiring the PC Financial business.

On the diplomatic front, Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and building new partnerships.

Finally, Statistics Canada is expected to release gross domestic product (GDP) figures for June and the second quarter on Friday. Preliminary estimates previously suggested a 0.2 per cent growth for June and a 3.4 per cent annualized gain for the second quarter.
