A wave of resignations among Members of Parliament is expected to trigger multiple federal byelections across Canada, with Elections Canada estimating the total cost to taxpayers could exceed $22 million. The agency notes that the average cost for a single byelection is approximately $2 million.

Three byelections are scheduled for August 31 in the ridings of North Vancouver—Capilano, Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, and Beaches—East York. These vacancies follow various departures, including Richard Martel, who accepted a Senate appointment, and Jonathan Wilkinson, who was named Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Nate Erskine-Smith also stepped down from his post in early July.

Five additional byelections are anticipated to fill upcoming vacancies in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec. If all vacancies are filled by the end of the year, 2026 will see one of the highest numbers of byelections in recent years.
