Canada commits $925M to Ukraine and announces submarine contract selection

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will provide C$925 million (about US$650 million) in new military aid to Ukraine. The package includes C$475 million for ammunition, nearly C$400 million for the production of 35 Canadian‑built armored vehicles and C$50 million for critical technology and engineering equipment. The announcement was made during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

Canada is also set to reveal the winner of its Submarine Patrol Project, a replacement program for its aging Victoria‑class fleet. The contract, valued at over $100 billion, pits Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (Type 212CD) against South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean (KSS‑III). The decision is part of a broader plan to raise defense spending to 5 % of GDP by 2035 and to modernize the Royal Canadian Navy for Arctic and Indo‑Pacific operations.
