Canada condemns Iran over Middle East instability and maritime threats
Canada has issued a formal condemnation of Iran, citing its destabilizing activities in the Middle East, including threats to maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, illicit nuclear programs, and support for regional proxy groups. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne issued a joint statement expressing support for G7-led economic pressure on Tehran.
In response, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei accused Canada of “strategic confusion” and “complicity in lawbreaking.” Baghaei argued that Canada is undermining its own claims of supporting international law by backing U.S. military and economic actions against Iran. He further questioned Canada's diplomatic independence, suggesting Ottawa is merely submitting to American pressure.
Canada's recent actions include the August 2026 sanctioning of five senior Iranian officials for obstructing navigation rights. This brings Canada's total sanctions against Iran to 492 individuals and entities under the Special Economic Measures Act. The maritime crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has reportedly left over 1,500 vessels stranded, impacting a waterway that carries approximately one-fifth of the world's oil supply.
