Canada confirms first underground natural hydrogen deposit in Saskatchewan

A Canadian mineral exploration firm, Max Power, drilled a well more than two kilometres deep in Saskatchewan and identified a large geological hydrogen occurrence. The results, verified in January 2026, marked the first confirmed underground natural hydrogen find in Canada. Initial measurements showed hydrogen concentrations as high as 28.6% and helium up to 8.7% within a 475‑km‑long zone, with drilling concentrated over a 14.2 km² area.

The company plans additional drilling to evaluate flow rates, pressure, continuity, concentration and scalability, aiming to determine whether the site could become the world’s first commercially viable underground hydrogen production field. Natural, or geological, hydrogen has not yet been exploited at commercial scale, but the discovery has drawn interest as a potential clean‑energy resource.
