Canada Joins Global Combat Air Programme as Observer

Canada announced it will become an observer in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a sixth‑generation stealth fighter project led by the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy. The observer status, expected to be confirmed at the Farnsworth International Airshow in July 2026, gives Ottawa access to program information without any immediate financial commitment. Defence Minister David McGuinty said Canada is “anxious to learn more” about the initiative after meetings with Japan’s defence minister Shinjiro Koizumi.

GCAP aims to field a new fighter by 2035 to replace Japan’s F‑2 jets, the Eurofighter Typhoons operated by the UK and Italy, and eventually the Canadian fleet. The programme’s timeline will not change even if new partners join, according to Edgewing CEO Marco Zoff. Canada’s move is presented as a way to diversify defence spending away from the United States and to explore future industrial participation. Analysts note that the observer role could later allow Canadian firms to join development or production, especially as Ottawa continues to review its planned purchase of 88 F‑35 aircraft, a deal already under scrutiny for cost and strategic reasons.
