Canada defends closure of seven agricultural research facilities

The Canadian federal government has defended its decision to close seven agricultural research facilities and experimental farm sites across the country. The closures are part of a broader government-wide cost-cutting initiative.

In a response to a House of Commons committee report from May, which recommended keeping the sites open, the government stated the move represents a shift toward prioritizing investment in research expertise and activities over operations and maintenance costs. Officials noted that 17 research centres will remain operational and that scientific activities will continue in other capacities.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism. The Agriculture Union and the National Farmers Union expressed being ‘deeply dismayed’ by the lack of action. Additionally, the Conservative opposition characterized the closures as a ‘betrayal of Canadian producers’ and a direct threat to national food security, arguing that the loss of scientific infrastructure could impact food affordability and safety.
