Canada defends dairy supply management amid U.S. trade tensions

Prime Minister Mark Carney has affirmed his government's loyalty to Canada's supply management system, which protects the domestic dairy sector. Carney stated that the system is essential for stabilizing consumer prices and protecting small farms. He cited the Liberal Party's selection of former dairy producer Daniel Gobeil as a candidate for the upcoming Chicoutimi-Le Fjord byelection as evidence of this commitment.

The stance comes amid intensifying trade tensions with the United States. President Donald Trump has frequently criticized Canada's supply management, citing it as a barrier to U.S. dairy farmers' market access. This friction occurs as a new round of 50 per cent tariffs on various Canadian goods is scheduled to take effect on August 19. Unlike previous tariffs, these are expected to have no exemptions for goods complying with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico agreement.

Dairy Farmers of Canada has urged the federal government to avoid further concessions, stating, "Our food sovereignty is not for sale; a bad deal is not worth the cost." Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has criticized the administration for failing to secure a deal and for making previous concessions, such as abandoning the digital service tax and increasing military spending, without achieving reciprocal results.
