Canada demands job-saving plan from Stelco owner Cleveland-Cliffs

The Canadian federal government is demanding that Cleveland-Cliffs, the U.S.-based owner of Stelco Holdings Inc., present a plan to save jobs within five days. This follows the announcement that the Hamilton-based steel plant intends to lay off 500 workers, a move attributed to U.S. tariffs and shifting market conditions.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly expressed “extreme disappointment” regarding the layoffs, noting that the 2024 approval of the Cleveland-Cliffs takeover under the Investment Canada Act was contingent on maintaining existing union and non-union job levels. Joly emphasized that these conditions remain binding regardless of changes in business strategy. The Canadian government has indicated it will consider legal action if the company fails to comply with its original acquisition undertakings.

The labor dispute occurs amid broader trade tensions between Canada and the United States. Recent U.S. Section 232 steel tariffs have impacted Canadian steel workers and disrupted supply chains in sectors such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR), where rising component costs are being passed on to consumers.
