Canada disputes $12M funding with Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations

The federal government, through Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), announced plans to file a statement of claim against the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) to recover more than $12 million in funding. The legal action follows a forensic audit that identified approximately $12,376,807 in ineligible spending between 2020 and 2024, including transactions related to COVID-19 and personal protective equipment procurement.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron has rejected the repayment demand, criticizing the handling of the audit. He stated that the organization remains confident that a fair review will prove all expenditures were eligible and the allegations false. While the initial audit flagged $34 million in questionable transactions, the ISC reduced its current repayment request to the $12 million figure.
