Canada e-scooter hospitalizations rise by 40 per cent

Hospitalizations related to e-scooter use in Canada rose by nearly 40 per cent over the past year, according to new data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Between April 2025 and March 2026, there were 837 hospitalizations, up from 601 during the same period the previous year. Common injuries included fractures as well as head and brain injuries.

The increase was particularly pronounced among children aged 15 and under, whose hospitalizations nearly tripled from 54 to 150. Data indicates that most injuries occurred in densely populated provinces, including Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec.

Medical experts and surveillance programs have noted the rising trend, with the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program reporting that 10 children died from e-scooter or e-bike injuries in 2025. While many provinces set the minimum riding age at 16, officials noted that rules are frequently ignored. There are calls for improved policy coordination and public education to address safety and varying jurisdictional bylaws.
