Canada emphasizes financial security and support for seniors
On National Seniors Day, Canadian officials and political figures highlighted the importance of financial security and support for the elderly.
Federal MP Marilène Gill expressed concern regarding the financial security of seniors, specifically supporting a Bloc Québécois bill aimed at ensuring equitable treatment for all Canadians aged 65 and older eligible for pensions. Gill noted that the reform is essential for retirees facing weakened purchasing power due to rising inflation and the cost of living.
Meanwhile, State Secretary for Seniors Stephanie McLean recognized the contributions of older Canadians to the country's social fabric. She noted that the year marks the 60th anniversary of the Canada Pension Plan and highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring dignified retirements through programs like New Horizons for Seniors. McLean also emphasized ongoing collaboration with provinces and territories to address issues such as innovative housing models, assistive technologies, and financial exploitation.
